America week days 5-7

quick note-

this past week has been a flurry of activity, so sorry for getting these out late! While we're in China, we're looking at a weekly update, but leave room for flexibility.

Thursday the 4th was our beach day! It wasn't the sunniest of days, but luckily the precipitation was kept to a sprinkle and we managed to have a great time. 




We visited Port Monmouth, and had some ice cream at Polar Bear ice cream shop. We highly recommend if youre ever in the area!

Friday was another packing day for me during the day, but the boys spent the evening with their grandma and her new puppy, Scruffy! I got to spend some time with friends!

Saturday we enjoyed some time at the Peddler's Village strawberry festival! We painted pots and colored on the mural! Nolan and his cousin took pictures in the strawberry prop, but Ollie didn't want to. He did get some hula hooping in though!






Sunday was personally my favorite day, as I got to take the boys to the "pay what you wish" day at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. We saw lots of cool artworks, and we even ran up (not all) of the Rocky steps!

Prometheus Bound by Peter Paul Rubens is one of my favorite paintings, but I unknowingly opened a can of worms because Nolan will not stop asking if he can steal fire from God.

Early Spring Update

I really tried to keep up with this project but alas, here we are, months later.  Since the end of last year, I kind of got swept away with responsibilities: helping santa ( I got sick for a few days after that) a new year's eve eve trip to hong kong, my own school starting, our daily schedule, the list goes on. I really let this pseudo-newsletter fall behind, and I'm sorry about that. I look forward to giving everyone updates on how things are going and I'm looking forward to seeing many of the people who read this post in the future trips back home.  We were able to do a solid Christmas this year, thanks in part to the people who sent Christmas money to us and the boys (you know who you are!! :) ) , and we had a nice cozy holiday. I also learned how to put bikes together this winter! The first six months

We've been here for six months! Holy shit.  About two weeks ago, the homesickness really started to set in, at least for me. It cooled off a bit here, and it just reminded me that everyone back home got their sweaters out a while back. We did Halloween (which I posted pictures from on Facebook but I'll attach the link to the google drive at the bottom of the post) by running through a popular shopping area with a swarm of other kids, both foreigners and chinese, and they had a good time, but they missed going door to door with their friends and reese's cups and snickers (most of the candy was like, gummy burgers and lollipops or mints). Of course they got sick right after, Oliver first, then Nolan, so we had one miss Halloween at school and then we had to reschedule Nolan's birthday party. Which was great! Our first haircut (way late)

So, we left getting haircuts a little long-  I was nervous to put them in the hands of someone other than my mother in law. I could have let it grow out for another month or so, really get the windswept 90's boyband hairstyle going, but neither of them like to let me do their hair and I have little faith in their styling skill at this juncture in their lives (oliver had been trying a combover... uh, no). Both Nolan and Oliver had been asking if they could grow their hair out, but I generally still have to oversee showers a few times a month to ensure proper washing techniques, and I generally have to force Nolan to comb his hair post shower. So, maybe next year.  I picked out a few hair styles on pinterest and the boys seemed to reach a consensus (after some gentle guidance) on what kind of haircut they wanted, so we went down to the barber Keith had used over the summer with solid results.
